This nut holds the shock into the air bag. The bolt spins in place. Any ideas on this one?

Can you wedge the nut against the surrounding metal and use a wrench to turn the shaft (by the flats) to get it to start to back off? This isn’t an uncommon thing to see on the top of shocks but there’s not usually stuff keeping you from getting at it from the side

You'll probably have to use an impact gun on that one.

You’re supposed to hold that in place with a wrench and use a second wrench to loosen the nut.

I think I’m going to have to cut the to piece off to do that.

usually an impact will get those loose, but there is a special two-part wrench... You can use probably use a flex-joint combination wrench to hold the nut and then turn the shaft (notice that it’s got flats on it) with a box wrench. Have you checked with your local Advance Autoparts or other major chain to see if they have the Audi/VW shock tool to borrow or rent?

If an impact won’t do it you will need one of these, or similar:

http://m.ebay.com/itm/1404838424…

http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d…

They have pass-through deep sockets and “D” or oval style sockets to hold the center of the shock from turning.

They’re really brilliant. Maybe you can find one locally like jawz suggested.

when I had to do that on my e30, I got a pair of long nose vice grips to hold it. Those have come in use several times, great purchase...

Are you replacing the shock or just the mount on top? If you’re replacing the shock, you could grab the shaft under the boot with some vice grips while hitting the top with the impact.

EDIT: Nevermind. Shaft is attached to the airbag so it's a no go. Like you said in your latest post, cutting the top of the bag off might be best if you're already replacing them. I'd be interested in seeing the inside of them anyways!

No, you use a deep flared offset wrench. Time for a trip to a tool place...

Ah yeah I can picture the tool now, he probably won’t be able to find it at a normal hardware store. Hopefully one of the tool brands on Amazon have it.

Like this but cheaper and with Prime

You need something like this . But, with Prime and much cheaper. See if Gearwrench makes the right size and sells it by itself on Amazon.

That might work, but it's iffy. I know the flare socket would work, and I think Hazet makes one for this job.

You want deep offset wrenches. You can get em from HF on the cheap. See here.
